TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE – 2d. Mechanical Systems (Pulleys)

pulley is a simple machine that makes it easier to lift or move a heavy object. It includes at least one wheel and a length of rope.

How does a pulley system work?

A pulley system gives you a mechanical advantage, that’s technical talk for help.

At it’s simplest a system would includes at least one wheel and a length of rope, though the more wheels you have the less effort you have to put in, but the greater the amount of rope you have to pull.

How many types of pulley systems are there?

Not sure on the number because you can increase and decrease the number of turns a rope make within a system. Though pulley systems can be made up from the following formations of pulleys, such as

  • fixed,
  • movable and
  • compound pulley.

Have a look at the presentation to see the visual demonstrations of pulley systems.
